PROJECT DETAILS
A modernised and reimagined food palace restored to its former glory.
When Östermalm's Market Hall was opened in 1888, it was a brilliant example of the modern technique. It was designed by architects Isak Gustaf Clasan and Kasper Salin. When it is re-inaugurated in 2020, it will once again be at the cutting edge of technology. Advanced technology combined with visible luminaires in a typical style will provide both a discreet and obvious impression.
Lighting should not attract attention, but create atmosphere, promote well-being and accentuate the variety of goods. The visible time-typical luminaires create a cosy feeling and a warmer light, while the more technical luminaires with precise optics are concealed to provide spatial light to complement the general layer of light.
Incandescent light in a realistic way
Because incandescent light was the norm during the Mall’s early years, the warm, beautiful glow from these lamps is the right way to illuminate the construction even today. Using the latest LED technology, we can simulate the incandescent light in a realistic way, whilst reducing maintenance costs and, most importantly, saving energy.
Because modern LED luminaires can be equipped with powerful modules and efficient optics, we also have the opportunity to direct the light precisely where we want it, even from afar, and create truly dynamic light scenes. With the help of light we can direct our gaze towards the food and encourage a focus on the human element, to create pleasant and inviting environments. Good colour rendering is particularly important for highlighting objects and people in the most authentic and attractive way possible.
The architects version, a modernised version where typical time character is preserved
It is of cultural and historic importance to try and highlight as much as possible of the original architecture of the Market Hall. The interior has changed substantially over the years, which has greatly impaired both the aesthetic value of the space and the appeal to customers and visitors. Based on this, we want to create a lighting environment that highlights architectural qualities, awakens appetite and invites you to socialise.
In general, we have worked with a warm light that is similar to incandescent light. In some situations however, it is justified to use other colour temperatures - such as in the application of indirect light against the ceiling of the hall, which can be seen as an amplification of the daylight. Carefully considered use of integrated lighting in refrigerated counters may also have a different colour temperature, in order to highlight the food on display in the most appealing and realistic way possible.
