PROJECT DETAILS
The Ørje and Strømfoss locks are now illuminated with colors that give the locks an atmospheric look.
Our KALYPSO IP67 in RGBW has been installed as indirect lighting in the locks to provide orientation and safety for visitors.
RGBW is multicolor LED light with the colors red, green and blue as well as white light, which together can create colorful, creative and evocative installations, but also provide a clean and neutral white light.
In October, the locks were illuminated with pink to mark the Pink Ribbon campaign and in November the locks were blue to draw attention to Movember.
A bit of history about the locks:
The Halden Canal is one of 15 facilities in Norway that are part of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage's Conservation Programme for "Technical and Industrial Cultural Heritage". Haldenkanalen became a member in 2013 and has since carried out a comprehensive restoration of locks and buildings via funds from this program.
Both Ørje and Strømfoss locks were constructed by Engebret Soot and were completed in 1860. They were built to ensure the safe flow of timber from the forests inland to the sawmills closer to the coast. Today, the facility is used to lock leisure boats in the summer.
Ørje locks are surrounded by a beautiful, old building environment and on the west side of the locks is the lock master house and lock assistant residence, both in Swiss style. At the top lock stands a memorial stone to the canal builder Engebret Soot, the country's foremost canal builder.
Engebret Soot planned the oldest part of the Telemark Canal and was behind the construction of both the Otteid Canal, the Soot Canal and the Halden Canal. The monument to his memory was erected in 1936, 150 years after his birth.
Both locks were previously illuminated with bright lighting in order to carry out safe locking of timber and boats both spring and autumn. With the restoration of the lock systems in recent years, parts of the lighting scheme were taken down in order to gain better access to the lock systems during the restoration period. In anticipation of funding, the "light project" has been dormant. For the safety of visitors, it was of crucial importance again to illuminate the locks.
