Flowers, foliage and trees – presented in their best light
A light-filled glass building, with brass- and gold-coloured vertical metal panels enclosing the imposing façade: visitors coming through the open entrance area and into the garden centre are plunged into a world of colourful flowers, green foliage and the sweet and aromatic fragrances of flowers and herbs. The newly built Bucher Gartencenter in the Swiss municipality of Widnau turns the buying of plants into a multi-sensory experience, thanks not only to a cleverly devised shop-in-shop concept and multiple promotional displays, but also the lighting solution from Zumtobel with tunableWhite, which successfully showcases the retail spaces using finely balanced lighting effects – high-quality indoor, outdoor and emergency lighting for an exceptional garden centre.
Whether you’re breathing in the scent of sage and lavender, marvelling at the opulence of a hydrangea or stroking the long, supple needles of a pine tree, a visit to a garden centre is a sensory experience. In order to immerse customers in the world of ornamental and useful plants, flower bulbs, garden tools and home accessories right from the start, Bucher Gartencenter, newly opened in 2022, uses many different interactive areas, comprehensive customer service, expert advice and airy, high-ceilinged rooms, instead of the usual mugginess of a greenhouse.
Immersive experience, excellent customer guidance
The sophisticated lighting concept, with its uniform, discreet design and tunableWhite for individually adjustable light colours, provides a suitable framework for the setting. Projekt AG – Ingenieurbüro für Elektrotechnik were responsible for the lighting and electrical design, while Zumtobel provided the lighting, using the TECTON continuous-row lighting system as a basis.
A major advantage of this system is that the TECTON trunking creates a foundation for general and safety lighting, lighting management and acoustics that will never go out of style. Luminaires, emergency lighting and speakers can all be individually fitted, quickly mounted and positioned wherever required on the TECTON track. For an immersive experience, optimum customer guidance and maximum safety, a total of 650 metres of TECTON trunking was installed in record time: the construction of the garden centre took just five months from the laying of the foundation stone to the opening.
Excellent products, high-quality lighting
A visit to the Zumtobel Light Forum in Dornbirn played a central role in the selection of a suitable lighting system. There, the customer was able to explore various lighting solutions alongside the lighting designers – and to experience their impact within a room for themselves.
"Bucher Gartencenter had three main requirements", says Thomas Winterhalter, project manager at Zumtobel Licht AG St. Gallen. "Firstly, lighting and emergency lighting needed to function on one platform. Secondly, they needed variable light colours and effects for the changing plant displays at different times of the year. Thirdly, they wanted the excellent quality of the plants on display to be enhanced with high-quality lighting." In the end, a TECTON continuous-row lighting system with different luminaires and emergency lighting, as well as tunableWhite, was chosen.

Discreet luminaire design, uniform look
"It was very important for us not to use the light as an end in itself", says Roger Krüsi, member of the management team at Projekt AG. "Instead, we wanted it to remain in the background in order to allow the flowers, plants and accessories to take centre stage." The continuous, compact TECTON system ensures excellent uniformity – and combines discreet design, maximum light quality and state-of-the-art building infrastructure: “The black luminaires perfectly complement the metal structures in the building”, says Krüsi.
The presentation of goods at the Bucher Gartencenter focuses on different aspects: in the ‘boutique’ area, artificial light is responsible for illuminating the garden and flower accessories. In the area with a retractable glass roof, the plants benefit from the daylight: direct sunlight and temperatures can be controlled by a sophisticated system of blinds and automated skylights, while fabric panels with various light transmission factors ensure plenty of shade.

Appealing to all customers’ senses
The artificial light in the boutique draws customers’ attention to the goods on display and also emphasises the character of different ‘rooms’. Similarly to a shop-in-shop concept, Bucher Gartencenter arranges individual goods on thematically coherent sales floors. Here, the TECTON MIREL and TECTON MPO continuous-row luminaires are used, with accent lighting provided by VIVO II spotlights with tunableWhite. Whether rich red tones for Christmas or fresh green and white for Easter, the individually programmable tunableWhite spotlights display all the goods beautifully, providing a stimulating sales atmosphere and high colour rendering. TECTON adapters, via which speakers and additional sockets can be connected, help create a multi-sensory customer approach.
Entertainment, experience, knowledge transfer
The centre also offers target-group-specific facilities, in which light from Zumtobel creates the perfect atmosphere for interaction and communication: for those accompanying visitors to the garden centre, Bucher Gartencenter has set up a ‘haven’ for men with table football, Formula One racing and delicious coffee to keep them entertained while they wait.
School children or entire class groups will enjoy the butterfly house, where they can learn about the life cycle of the butterfly – from egg to caterpillar to adult butterfly.
Splash water protection under the glass roof
Splash-water-protected luminaires are required in the area with the retractable roof, which gets plenty of daylight and has skylights that can be opened if required. Here, the AMPHIBIA moisture-proof diffuser luminaire on a ZX2 trunking is used. In the offices, which were integrated into the hall as a wooden cube, MIREL pendant luminaires provide perfect light for accounting and back-office work.
The storage and utility rooms at Bucher Gartencenter are equipped with TECTON Basic. The RESCLITE PRO emergency light is also integrated in the TECTON trunking – and is monitored centrally with the help of the ONLITE emergency lighting system. The safety lighting enables Bucher Gartencenter to fulfil one of the central requirements of the planning permission for the building. The striking façade of the building is perfectly lit by CONTRAST 3 floodlights from affiliate brand Thorn.
Special lighting solutions available on request
Alongside lighting solutions from the classic Zumtobel portfolio, the lighting experts were also able to provide special lighting solutions. For example, the entrance area of the garden centre looks like a small footbridge – thanks to customised lighting created in collaboration with Swiss company Inventron AG. Zumtobel also provided an additional mounting option that enables the round wide-area luminaire ONDARIA to be easily attached to the TECTON rail. In addition, Zumtobel was able to offer the TECTON MPO continuous-row luminaire with black housing. This is only available in white as standard ex works – and had to be painted and foiled at a specialist company in Switzerland at the special request of the customer.
Strong on-site presence
"This flexibility was only possible because Zumtobel was very present on site during the project", says Roger Krüsi from Projekt AG. "Project manager Thomas Winterhalter was committed to meeting his customer’s needs – and provided advice and support for all important decisions."
Broad palette of lighting solutions, agile implementation
A uniform, discreet lighting concept that leaves room for individual lighting effects and integrates splash water protection, emergency lighting and audio: the lighting solution for Bucher Gartencenter once again shows that Zumtobel is sufficiently versatile to meet a wide variety of requirements for state-of-the-art lighting, but also agile enough to create tailor-made products that are closely aligned with customers’ needs.
"As a family business, Bucher had the courage to turn a bold vision into reality and completely rethink the concept of the garden centre", says Roger Krüsi. "The lighting solution from Zumtobel underlines this effect: the rooms are given a whole new character that captivates visitors and customers from the first glance." For glorious flowers, blossoms and foliage you can not only smell and touch but also see – in their very best light.
