PROJECT DETAILS
Lighting at the service of architecture
A bridge of light illuminates the city
A complex and unparalleled architectural form in the MedienHafen in Düsseldorf, a lively district characterised by great cultural churning thanks to the recent intervention of celebrated architects and the development of activities related to the world of creativity and design. The Capricorn Bridge in polymorphic glass and tubular-steel was designed by the architecture firm SuperGelb to connect the Capricornhaus and Float Office buildings that comprise the HQ of Uniper, a company operating in the energy sector since January 2016, following the spin-off of E.ON. Capricorn Bridge appears as an entirely independent element from an architectural perspective, completely deviating from the two buildings it faces and connects, realised by the architecture studio of Gatermann+Schossig (Capricornhaus) and by Renzo Piano Architects (Float Office) respectively. The result is an element of great scenic impact that adds a further touch of modernity to the district.
REFLECTIONS OF THE CREATOR
To create homogeneous illumination that prevented glare on the one hand whilst highlighting the architectural work comprised of glass and steel elements on the other. This is the objective of the lighting project developed by the Jack Be Nimble lighting design studio in Berlin for the Capricorn Bridge. It was quite a challenge, given the complex form of the bridge at 37 metres in length and positioned at a height of 4 metres above the ground, with a central pylon at which the various lines of construction intersect and that supports all the weight; with a supporting structure consisting of steel tubes on which the trapezoidal and triangular glass elements rest, enclosing the entire construction; and finally, with an internal metal walkway to traverse whilst suspended and swathed in the feeling of being one with the external environment.
Dirigo from the i-LèD collection is the linear protagonist of the project, chosen by the Jack Be Nimble lighting design studio responsible for realising the technical-lighting project. The system contains a new concept of light, representing the ideal solution for illuminating paths and walkways. Within the bridge, where it was not possible to fasten any device to the walls or ceilings due to being the steel and glass structure, Dirigo proved to be the most effective way to illuminate the path homogeneously, without the risk of irritating glare whilst emphasising the complex architectural form of the construction.
A custom version of Dirigo was fitted, with tailored lengths and special angles for the junction points, on both sides of the flooring along the entire walkway. In this way, light is reflected from the ground directly within the entire space and the scenographic effect that is obtained – being especially visible at night – is surprisingly magical.
