In for the Win with RGBW at the Climate Pledge Arena
Project Design Brief
The prestigious Rockwell Group selected VISO to design-engineer and manufacture custom lighting for the Climate Pledge Arena (formerly known as KeyArena). Here, this multi-purpose, 74-acre entertainment complex located north of Downtown Seattle is home to 200 events that take place annually.
Named after the Climate Pledge, this coliseum is known for its green initiatives and aims to be the most progressive, responsible, and sustainable arena in the world. The built-in premium spaces needed a luxurious design that also fell in-line with the arena's innovative goals and values.
Result
The Rockwell Group crafts individual narratives, creating a unique experience for each project. Starting from the conceptual stage with curated sketches, technical drawings, and premium materials, VISO worked closely with Rockwell Group to custom manufacture the arena and its premium spaces. These areas include: Möet & Chandon Impérial Lounge, Mount Baker Hall Pitchbook Suites, Space Needle Lounge, Symetra Club and WAFD Bank Club, and the Tunnel Club Suites. Each section is designed with a masculine elegance that still works together for one unified look. Naturally, this translated into bold designs through the oversized floor lamps, chandeliers, pendants, wall mounted lamps, and sconces throughout the space.
In particular, hanging in the Symetra Club, are black mesh pendants with an array of RGBW and DMX controls for custom light sequences. As well, oversized brass chandeliers decorate the ceilings of the Möet & Chandon Impérial Lounge with premium leather wrapped shades that show a soft rustic flair. With a space this large, this high profile project needed special care and attention which VISO successfully provided.
Challenges
One of the main challenges was to custom manufacture oversized floor lamps that accommodate the size of the complex and, at the same time, offset and balance the weight of the fixture. With this purpose, the design and engineering team needed to calculate specific geometric angles for each arm that branched out to avoid stressing itself and hanging too low. Additionally, each of its large custom glass shades used a pulley to support the weight.
A secondary challenge presented when the designer wanted to have custom dome pendants match specific opacities. As a result, this unique design features three domes neatly set within another, all with different treatments. The outer dome needed to be completely clear, while the middle dome needed a 20% opacity, and 50% opacity for the inner dome. VISO accomplished this by design-engineering two-sided clear and glossy polycarbonate shades. Specifically, the outer dome has a clear and glossy finish, the middle dome has an outside glossy/inside fine frost finish, and the inner dome has an outside glossy/inside frost finish. This treatment added dimension and a clean elegance to an otherwise simple form.
The Designs
Custom Grand Pendants: These larger-than-life cylindrical pendants vary in sizes, all taller than your average person. They are covered by a fine-detailed metal mesh on each of the acrylic fins that wrap these custom lighting. 18 of these large-scale fixtures, installed as either single pendants or clusters of three, enhance the Symetra Club. Each of these light fixtures uses RGBW along with DMX protocols. Therefore, customizing light sequences after installation are possible by using the digital system.

Custom Wall Sconce: Four grand-scale wall sconces sit at 66" tall with industrial design elements to match the exposed pipework that is displayed in the Symetra Club area. The proprietary antique brass finish carries throughout its form and matches the rest of the interior style.

Custom Large Floor Lamps: Inspiration of the Pacific Northwest continues to shine through. As you can see, this collection of custom manufactured giant floor lamps features clear glass shades. Burnt orange leather wraps around each glass and is paired with beige stitching and antique brass. Not to mention, the rich finishes and textures of this fixture are enlarged through its large size. This collection can fit in multiple areas because of the custom variations of a single-arm, double-arm, and triple-arm.

Custom Interior Pendant: These dome pendants show a unique layering of different opacities that were matched to specific percentages. Each layer is made of a two-sided clear and glossy finish that shines through the custom lighting. The three domes measure at 12", 16", and 20" diameters giving an even 4" gap in between.

Custom Crystal Chandelier: A palatial crystal chandelier suspends within the Space Needle Lounge. This impressive ring chandelier spanning 132"/3362mm in diameter features a display of crystals each at 18"/457mm in height. Moreover, completing this design is an antique brass plate that houses recessed downlights for additional illumination. Also highlighting brass hues and amber lights within, this custom chandelier transforms its crystals into a gorgeous display of cognac opulence.
