Ceilings, lighting and more: an attractive integrated solution for office and logistics buildings
Visitors to the imposing new Getzner Werkstoffe headquarters in the Austrian municipality of Bürs enter a spacious, expansive building filled with high-quality materials, from elegant oiled oak floors, large glass façades and dark oak wall panels to pale exposed concrete and a dark lamella ceiling dotted with striking light points. The extension and refurbishment of the administrative building is part of a comprehensive plan to expand the company premises that also includes the construction of a new logistics centre with high-bay warehouse. In partnership with HAUFE Deckensysteme (Ceiling System) from Sersheim in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Zumtobel has installed a unique illuminated ceiling system that meets the highest of expectations in terms of both aesthetics and technical sophistication. Lighting, heating, cooling and acoustics are all integrated into the ceiling system for a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient and extremely flexible integrated solution.
Getzner Werkstoffe is the leading specialist in vibration and shock protection for the rail, construction and industry sectors. The completely refurbished administrative building, together with an additional 8,000 square metres of new buildings that include a state-of-the-art high-bay warehouse, demonstrates the vibration insulation experts’ belief in the company location in Vorarlberg – and confirms their commitment to uncompromising quality, expansion and growth. These values are reflected in the architecture and finish of the new premises: the reception, administrative and showroom areas feature high-quality materials, a uniform appearance and a captivating geometric design, while the wooden floors, louvre ceilings and luminaires all travel in the same direction, generating a particularly dynamic spatial effect.
Illuminated ceiling solution makes for attractive office architecture
"The meeting zone is the representative area of the Getzner Werkstoffe company that is accessible to visitors", says Sebastian Wörter from architects’ office Nachbaur Wörter. "This space should therefore be an understated, elegant and well-thought-out representation of the company."
The aim of Zumtobel’s custom lighting solution was to integrate the showroom’s wall washers, general lighting and object lighting into the suspended HAUFE louvre ceilings – a complex challenge that Zumtobel was able to master elegantly and seamlessly, with the help of the SUPERSYSTEM inline system luminaire as an integrated downlight solution. In addition to the public-facing spaces and offices, Zumtobel also equipped the new high-bay warehouse, laboratory zone, technology centre and shipping area with state-of-the-art luminaires.

Large spaces instead of small individual offices
The centrepiece of the innovative lighting solution in the shared space is the combination of HAUFE louvre ceilings and Zumtobel recessed luminaires. The solution also includes a surface temperature control and acoustics, which are likewise integrated into the ceiling system. What was previously an area divided into smaller spaces with lots of individual offices is now a large, open space: a reception area and showroom for receiving customers on the ground floor, a cafeteria for the employees on the first floor as well as administrative offices and a foyer on the second floor have all been equipped with the integrated illuminated ceiling system by HAUFE and Zumtobel.
Implementing a solution during ongoing operations
A particular challenge of the project was carrying out refurbishment work during ongoing operations: "Strict schedules and a professional approach were essential", says Sebastian Wörter of Nachbaur Wörter Architekten. "The polygonal room structure made project design particularly difficult and required solution-oriented teamwork from all project participants. For example, we created a mock-up of the ceiling solution with all conceivable installation situations on site in order to find the best solution."
Peak brightness meets perfect glare control
Around 250 Zumtobel SUPERSYSTEM inline modules were installed in the HAUFE ceilings. With its low installation height combined with excellent light output and optimal glare control values (UGR < 19), this system luminaire perfectly complements the lamella system. The LED recessed module can be inserted flush with the lamella edge to create a uniform, smart look. "The lighting creates a completely glare-free and brilliant spatial appearance. It’s unobtrusive, invisible and extremely high-quality", says Sebastian Wörter of Nachbaur Wörter Architekten. It is also particularly flexible to use: the modules are installed on the louvres using tool-free snap-on holders and can be easily repositioned whenever required. The lighting solution can also be easily adapted if usage requirements and zoning within the space change.
Flexible light, harmonious spatial impression
In the age of New Work, modern, multifunctional office spaces are in demand – and that’s what the system provides: "Ceilings and lighting must reflect the necessary functionality, but also allow a wide range of applications", says Ute Schmalseder, Chief Operating Officer of HAUFE. "HAUFE ceilings provide the quiet and clarity of sound required in a multifunctional room. Zumtobel luminaires can always be adapted to new room layouts – without the user having to rewire everything."

Fully integrated: lighting, acoustics, heating, cooling
The solution also features great room acoustics: a micro-perforation of the louvres and the acoustic fleece ensures efficient sound absorption in the building. In addition, the surface temperature control provides extremely energy-efficient heating and cooling: "The folding technology of the lamellas creates a larger surface area in a small space. With a surface temperature control in our ceiling system, the flow temperature can be reduced to 25 to 27 degrees, which has huge potential for savings", explains Ute Schmalseder, Chief Operating Officer of HAUFE.
The right lighting solution for every functional area
As well as the public-facing areas of the Getzner Werkstoffe premises, Zumtobel also provided the functional areas with customised lighting. In the labs, the MELLOW LIGHT evolution ceiling-recessed luminaires provide a gentle and uniform brightness that illuminates work areas, ceilings and walls with harmonious, glare-free light. The meeting rooms are lit by PANOS infinity LED downlights, attractive architectural lights that combine maximum light quality and energy efficiency. In access zones such as corridors and stairwells, SLOTLIGHT infinity ensures consistently clear lines and excellent orientation.
In the newly built high-bay warehouse, Getzner Werkstoffe stocks vibration control mats, which can be up to 31 metres long and weigh up to 14 tonnes and are wound onto reels for shipping. The TECTON continuous-row lighting system is used in the storage area, creating a foundation for general lighting, safety lighting and lighting management. With its ease of installation and luminaires that can be positioned wherever required, TECTON will never go out of style. The grounds with their green spaces and parking spaces are lit by the Urba street luminaires from the portfolio of Zumtobel sister brand, Thorn.

Streamlined solution saves space, time and money
This project is yet more proof that Zumtobel offers tailor-made lighting solutions for various functional areas, all from a single source, as well as a range of innovative, new applications alongside a standardised product portfolio. In its partnership with HAUFE, it has succeeded in integrating lighting, acoustics, heating and cooling in a compact ceiling system, for example. This ultra-streamlined solution not only saves on space and installation height, but also on the use of materials, time and money that would otherwise be needed to install four different trades one after the other and integrate them harmoniously into the architecture.
"Both partners brought their high standards in product quality and design as well as their in-depth knowledge of space and architecture to the project", says Manuel Staudinger, Zumtobel Sales Austria. "The result is not only an impressively attractive aesthetic, but also maximum functionality and energy efficiency – for perfectly illuminated spaces that people will enjoy using for a long time to come."
Tailor-made format for an industrial product
Architect Sebastian Wörter describes collaboration on the Getzner Werkstoffe project as "competent, pragmatic, professional and with short channels of communication." He also discovered a neat parallel between the client’s products and the new illuminated ceiling solution: "Getzner Werkstoffe supplies industrial vibration protection in a tailor-made format. The illuminated ceiling system by HAUFE and Zumtobel is also industrially produced, yet tailor-made for Getzner’s special spatial needs." All in all, a solution in which maximum innovative power meets efficient technology and impressive aesthetics, lighting and ceiling systems.
