Custom Lighting Solutions Enhance an International Landmark
As one of North America's most significant infrastructure projects, the Gordie Howe International Bridge was conceived not only as a critical transportation link between Canada and the United States, but also as a lasting architectural landmark.
Stretching across the Detroit River and connecting Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan, the bridge was designed to become a defining feature of the region's skyline. Aesthetics played a central role throughout the development, influencing architecture, landscaping, public spaces, and lighting design.
To support this vision, Atelier LP delivered a range of custom lighting solutions tailored to the project's unique architectural and functional requirements. The scope included custom pergolas integrating Lumenbeam luminaires, as well as specialised Lumenbeam and Lumenfacade configurations designed specifically for the site.
Several Lumenbeam fixtures were supplied in 347V with custom 3GV tenon mounting assemblies, providing a robust and seamless integration with the bridge's site furnishings and infrastructure elements. In addition, Lumenfacade luminaires were customised with an add-on security cable system featuring bespoke end caps, along with integrated visors across the full fixture lengths to enhance visual comfort and control light distribution.
The project also incorporated custom-length mounting accessories, including UMAs and straps, allowing each installation to respond precisely to varying mounting conditions throughout the site while maintaining a consistent architectural appearance.
The custom pergolas represent one of the project's most distinctive elements. Designed to integrate lighting directly within the structures, they extend the bridge's architectural language into pedestrian areas while providing targeted illumination for gathering and circulation spaces. By concealing the lighting equipment within the pergola framework, the solution achieves a clean, contemporary aesthetic without compromising performance.
Through close collaboration and extensive customization, Atelier LP helped create a cohesive nighttime experience across the site. The combination of bespoke architectural elements, customised mounting solutions, and high-performance luminaires contributes to a unified visual identity that complements the landmark character of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and reinforces its role as a new international gateway between Canada and the United States.
