PROJECT DETAILS
A NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR GPO
Located in Sydney’s central business district, the General Post Office building (known locally as GPO) is a prominent piece of Australian architectural history.
Now home to bars, shops, restaurants and accommodation, it’s a well-visited destination. And its façade is full of fascination. From granite carvings, marble statues to Sydney sandstone.
Previously, this exceptional building was left in the dark – its light fittings were hard to maintain, leaving them out of action.
To bring the GPO back to life, lighting designers Point of Life stepped in. Their brief? To incorporate low maintenance, discrete LED fixtures.
Working with distribution partner, JSB Lighting, POV chose acdc’s ARTEMIS.
It’s compact size and reliability were winning factors. With beam control, the building’s features could be picked out and stonework grazed. The top balconies were washed in soft light, while the clock tower stood bright and tall.
acdc’s special binning process ensured the lighting effect was consistent in colour and colour rendering.
POV’s Michel Goupy said, ‘We specifically wanted a low maintenance option, as this had been a major issue raised in the past. Artemis was a great choice for us. The installation was completed two years ago and there are no signs of wear to the casings or LED output.
‘We can again enjoy the elaborate detailing and craftsmanship of a unique era of stone masons during the night’.
