New Work: inspired work needs human-centric lighting
Comfortable seating areas, open spaces for collaboration and inspiring relaxation rooms: Hartung GmbH's headquarters in Neumünster, Schleswig-Holstein, is an incredibly modern “open space” in line with New Work criteria, spread over 1,500 m². A site that is specifically aimed at “people with ideas and passion” that represents a company's headquarters, co-working space and showroom, all rolled into one. Zumtobel's lighting solutions contribute by presenting the modern office architecture in its best light, establishing an intuitive layout and creating a harmonious atmosphere.
Open architecture, open room layouts
At the headquarters of Hartung GmbH, specialists in greeting cards, gifts and stationery, one of the defining principles is that of openness. This not only applies to the building’s architecture, which establishes a link between the internal and external with tall glass fronts, open staircase and a large skylight, but also to the configuration of the rooms. Instead of self-contained cellular offices, employees can expect an open plan, spacious room layout. Rather than individual restricted and divided offices, the space blends into one for intensive work, effective communicative exchange and for culinary breaks.. The lighting provided by Zumtobel helps to open up the space in a user-friendly way and create the best conditions for a versatile, inspiring work environment. “Our employees are delighted and are enjoying the different lighting scenarios,” summarises Olaf Reiner, Managing Director of Hartung GmbH. “An ingenious mix of accentuated and stylish basic lighting.”
Work and environment: how are the two connected?
Our results are significantly influenced by where we work and how this space is designed. For the new building of Hartung GmbH’s headquarters, Managing Director Olaf Reiner and his wife, Ute, considered in great detail the effect of rooms on workplace psychology and explored the question: what do modern offices look like today? “We wanted to create a modern, stylish atmosphere where people feel comfortable, where they like to come and where they can work creatively,” says Olaf Reiner. “We believe that a good work environment not only boosts people’s well-being but ultimately also their performance.”
Unique rooms in their best light
As an expert in photographic art and exceptional stationery, Hartung GmbH considers itself the “bearer of emotive messages”. The family business’s new premises should also be designed to meet this claim. A spectacular back wall made of moss, coffee-shop-like espresso bar, relaxation room in the style of a telephone booth, wooden staircase with seating as a mini arena, carpets in a relaxed boho style: all these elements ensure maximum comfort and cosiness. A versatile and attractive material composition – perfectly showcased with lighting provided by Zumtobel.
Open lines and a continuous exposed concrete ceiling give the rooms a contemporary “industrial look”. Warm-white light with 3000 K ensures that the rooms do not appear too cool, giving them a homely feel.
The cosiness of home, the communicative atmosphere of a marketplace
Zumtobel worked closely with Hartung GmbH's management team to achieve the optimum interaction between light, space and internal architecture: “We were in direct contact with Ute and Olaf Reiner and we were always able to develop their ideas in a flexible way,” recalls Zumtobel's Lighting Designer, Marcel Zimmermann.
“By providing a vision in advance, Zumtobel was able to bring all our ideas to life and specifically address our individual requirements,” says Olaf Reiner. “A very effective collaboration with great flexibility that catered to our specific requests.”
The result of the dynamic project: “The feel-good factor of home working is transported to the office,” says Lighting Designer Marcel Zimmermann. “I can grab myself a coffee and then sit down together with my colleagues in a comfortable setting to discuss ideas.” In the new premises, there is a close alliance between design considerations and maximum practicality, between a sense of community and optimum conditions, so that every individual can work productively and creatively.
Two Zumtobel luminaires, one versatile effect
Two contrasting lighting instruments from Zumtobel's portfolio lay the foundations for the state-of-the-art LED lighting solution: ONDARIA, the round surface luminaire in white and SUPERSYSTEM, the multifunctional lighting tool in black.
ONDARIA provides harmonious, homogeneous surface light from an organically shaped light body. As a decorative pendant luminaire, it adorns areas such as the void space above the free-standing staircase to the first floor. The luminaire flexibly blends into the open spaces and provides a soft background brightness on both the ground floor and upper floor.
Light guides the way and structures the room
SUPERSYSTEM spotlights on a 3-phase track provide directional lighting and lively accents. The black track solution perfectly matches the black window frames: they don't just close off the building to the outside, but also act as transparent room dividers on the inside. The constant linearity of the 3-phase track creates an intuitive layout.
SUPERSYSTEM also helps to delineate individual work zones – whether it's a kitchen or meeting space, relaxation room or public-facing lounge area. The flexibly adjustable spotlights allow individual wall and work surfaces, as well as, entire corridors and circulation spaces to be optimally illuminated. The discreet SUPERSYSTEM spotlights blend easily into the room and let the design elements take centre stage.
One track system, numerous options
Another feature is the great flexibility of the track system: alongside Zumtobel's own system luminaires, additional designer and decorative luminaires are installed on the track to catch the eye. “The ultra-flexible SUPERSYSTEM lighting infrastructure can be reconfigured again and again,” says Thomas Drohn, Project Manager at Zumtobel. “This brings a wide variety of different light effects, beam angles and luminaire designs to the room,” adds Marcel Zimmermann.
The PANOS Infinity downlight is also used as a work light in niches and relaxation rooms. Its round, organic shape contrasts nicely with the traditionally rectangular structure of the desks.
Light in strips
LED light strips are installed in the relaxation niches, on the edges between the wall and ceiling surfaces, as a visual signal and to brighten the rooms by beaming light upwards. When the individual workplaces are unoccupied, a dimmed light strip provides background brightness. When they are occupied, the LEDs light up to 100 per cent light output to signal, “this office is currently in use”.
Glacier is also used as a decorative LED pendant luminaire from the portfolio of Zumtobel's affiliate brand, Thorn. The striking black housing is created using a die-casting aluminium process and is a perfect visual match to the “industrial” look of the meeting rooms.
An eye-catcher from the outside too
Hartung GmbH's façade lighting ensures a high recognition factor, even at night. The spacious entrance area is showcased by the Plaza recessed floor luminaire from the portfolio of Zumtobel's affiliate brand, acdc. Thorn's contemporary architectural floodlight, Cesar, illuminates the side entrances. The decorative façade lighting sends directional light from bottom to top and outlines the geometric shape of the entrance area. The expert lighting symbolises openness and represents a visual invitation into the building.
The axes between the building's window fronts are also outlined by the Plaza recessed floor luminaire. Combined with the façade's metal grid panels, this creates a fascinating light and colour effect.
Lighting creates corporate identity
Zumtobel's lighting solution gives Hartung GmbH a distinctive “face” and forms part of the company's identity. The attractive workspaces with human-centric light are part of smart employer branding and signal personal appreciation towards each individual colleague. Light does not just provide visual support, but also emotional and biological support too – for maximum performance, motivation and visual comfort.
“With just a small selection of luminaires, we made an impressive impact at Hartung GmbH's headquarters,” says Zumtobel's Marcel Zimmermann. “Interior and exterior design: the combination of light, materials and surfaces creates harmonised rooms that not only invite you to linger but also have extremely versatile uses – from creative exchange to focussed relaxation.”
Today's light for the office of the future
The example of Hartung GmbH shows: New Work is also changing office lighting requirements. It involves spaces that promote a culture of well-being instead of being purely functional. Flexible workplaces instead of fixed desks. Creativity and collaboration instead of silo thinking. New workspaces need light that can be used flexibly and adapted when needed. Light that creates zones and individually illuminates different activities. Light that supports people's work in the room not just visually but also emotionally. Zumtobel meets these requirements with state-of-the-art LED luminaires, tailor-made solutions and contemporary lighting design from a single source. Today's light for tomorrow's world of work.
