PROJECT DETAILS
New lighting for a listed historic building
More than 50 different types of fish and seafood, mouthwatering cheese and meat specialities and fresh pasta: what used to be tellers’ windows in an old bank are now home to deli counters and chiller cabinets full of culinary delicacies. The property developer PEMA has breathed new life into the counter room in Vienna’s “Haus am Schottentor” following a conversion project that took over three years to plan and complete. The building, which is a protected historic monument and was commissioned by Anselm von Rothschild, was the architectural inspiration for banks across Europe in its time. Today, it is an attractive and convenient supermarket at the heart of the city. The lighting concept from Zumtobel not only presents INTERSPAR Austria’s gourmet products perfectly, but also sheds light on an exciting period in European architectural history.
The multifaceted lighting solution was designed by the lighting design agency Bartenbach GmbH in close collaboration with the lighting experts from Zumtobel. The aim of this ambitious project was both to fulfil the requirements of a prestigious premium supermarket and to adhere to the strict regulations that apply to a protected historic building. In addition, the lighting solution had to adhere to internal INTERSPAR standards that govern the lighting level and light scene.
Presenting and selling products in the best light
Zumtobel’s long-term collaboration with INTERSPAR proved an advantage in this complex challenge. The Austrian lighting experts not only used state-of-the-art lighting technology and excellent light quality, but also developed tailor-made lighting solutions that perfectly meet the requirements of the historic building. “The aim was to show a former bank building in its best light and do justice to its status as the number one location in the food retail business,” says David Schöfmann, Team Leader for Key Account Management at Zumtobel.
Into the present day
Working closely with the Federal Monuments Authority Austria, PEMA and INTERSPAR removed fixtures that were not part of the original architecture, painstakingly repaired any damage and restored the building to its former glory. At the same time, the interior design firm Kulmus Bügelmayer GmbH and product range managers from INTERSPAR converted the rooms to meet the needs of the supermarket clientele of today. In terms of lighting technology, Zumtobel was responsible for carefully transforming the existing lighting with its historical luminaires, fitted with incandescent lamps, into a future-proof, state-of-the-art LED lighting solution.
Update for historical special pendant luminaires
Particular attention was given to the lighting in the former banking hall. Working with the lighting designers from Bartenbach, Zumtobel sensitively recreated the historical special pendant luminaires – and inserted LED lights. “We were able to recreate both the pendant luminaires in the former banking hall and the elegant luminaires in the foyer and entrance to the restaurant,” says David Schöfmann from Zumtobel.
Zumtobel put enormous care into every detail of this project in order to satisfy the historic monuments authorities and supermarket owners alike. First of all, the existing luminaires were precisely measured, and the colours of the glass and other materials were agreed with the architects and lighting designers. Finally, the technology in the historical special pendant luminaires was adapted to meet modern requirements.
Sensitive backlighting for glass ceilings
The original glass ceilings in the banking hall are another highlight – in the truest sense of the word. Zumtobel has skilfully backlit these with the TECTON continuous-row lighting system, creating the impression that daylight is streaming through the glass. To accentuate the counters in the retail space, Zumtobel provided a profile system with sophisticated VIVO II pendant luminaires and integrated LED spotlights. Selected products are highlighted with MICROTOOLS shelving luminaires with special lighting technology. Also used are ONZPO, INTRO liteCarve® and VIVO II LED spotlights, the CARDAN evolution accent luminaire and the SUPERSYSTEM multifunctional LED lighting tool.
Mezzanin: gourmet in the limelight
In the adjoining restaurant, “Mezzanin”, the lighting solution from Zumtobel ensures that dishes from Austria and around the world are shown at their best. DIAMO MD miniaturised recessed luminaires and spotlights, imposing MICROS downlights and continuous SLOTLIGHT infinity light lines with MiniCell reflectors create a pleasant atmosphere in which to sit and enjoy a meal. Precise lighting accents are provided by architectural CARDAN evolution recessed luminaires.
Imposing yet functional
As well as the numerous imposing lighting tools from Zumtobel, functional luminaires are also used in the side rooms of the supermarket. These include the MIREL-LAY louvre luminaire and the TECTON basic continuous-row luminaire. CETUS LED downlights and AQUAFORCE Pro moisture-proof luminaires are provided by the manufacturer Thorn, part of the Zumtobel Group.
Attractive facade lighting
Also part of the Thorn range are the CONTRAST 2 LED floodlights used in the exterior lighting of the six-storey Haus am Schottentor, which subtly trace the façade design of the striking urban building with warm, dimmed rays of light .
Glare-free and brilliant
Despite the diverse range of luminaires used, they all contribute to INTERSPAR Austria’s consistent, harmonious brand image. As David Schöfmann, Team Leader for Key Account Management at Zumtobel emphasises: “The systems illuminate the products with exceptionally brilliant light, which accentuates the colours and details of the food particularly well. The luminaires are positioned in a way that ensures they are glare-free, and the customer is supported with orientation and spatial perception through a kind of hierarchy of brightness.” As a result of the comprehensive lighting solution, customers are subtly and gently guided through the unique product landscape at INTERSPAR on Schottentor.
Meeting the requirements of a modern retail space, complying with regulations protecting historic buildings and providing all lighting services from a single source: in its collaboration with INTERSPAR Austria, Zumtobel has once again proved to be a reliable partner that is able to respond to a wide range of challenges. “That starts with the façade lighting – and includes both standard and special luminaires as well as decorative statement luminaires,” says David Schöfmann. A one-stop-shop with comprehensive lighting expertise.
