PROJECT DETAILS
Lighting Machine
This piece was born out of light, glass and three hundred meters of metal tubes. Now it decorates the building, which represents a step into the digital world. The name K11 Musea means a ‘Muse by the Sea’ – a place for discoveries. Look inside and discover the New World Development.
Industrial Jewel
The seemingly chaotic assemblage of metal tubes crowns the sparkling ceiling like a giant pendant. Under the hand-painted curved metal panels hangs this steampunk piece, which now and then releases steam clouds.
Living Organism
“The whole object is a living, breathing organism – it pulsates, turns its light on and off, steam leaks from some tubes,” says the designer Maxim Velčovský.
Genius Loci
Back in the day, this part of Hong Kong used to be shrouded in thick smoke. Now there is K11 Musea – a green building which was born like a phoenix from the ashes of former times. The Lighting Machine reflects all the attributes of the olden times – metal, industry and even steam.
Hundred Meters of Tubes
Altogether, 330 meters of metal tubes were needed to create this extraordinary chandelier. There are stop-clocks which seem to regulate the steam coming out of the chandelier at eight different places.
Transport
The design was rapidly changed one month before opening and yet we made it to deliver the piece on time.
Installation
The whole piece was installed in tight time-schedule during one week before the grand opening.
Memory
Victoria Docks has rapidly changed over the last century. K11 is a building of the future. A place to discover new things, but a small piece of memory of the hub’s history lingers – The Lighting Machine – a breath of the century of steam.
