PROJECT DETAILS
The mighty construction of the Karlsborg fortress on Vanäs udde began in 1819 and was completed in 1909. The fortress was the largest in Europe and was decommissioned in 1928. The fortress was built as part of the central defense tank that was born when Sweden lost Finland and Åland to Russia in the war of 1808-09. Sweden's border moved and we became vulnerable to hostile powers and needed a new type of defense. State Councilor Baltzar von Platen, who constructed the Göta Canal, was part of the 1809 defense committee. He advocated a centrally located fortress in the interior of the country. The intention was that the royal family, the government, the gold reserve and the crown jewels would be moved to safety in the event of war. Since 1935, Karlsborg Fortress has been a state building monument and is managed by the State Property Agency.
In 2019, the Norwegian Property Agency, together with our special workshop Ateljén, produced the Karl luminaire, which today illuminates walkways and parks around the entire fortress area.
