PROJECT DETAILS
Sparks of Fire
In the northern parts of the country, the winter darkness is cherished and the atmosphere is lit up with torches, fire baskets and marshals. But when smoke and soot from burning wood and wax became an environmental problem on Campus, Luleå University of Technology, lighting designer Caroline Långström at Tyréns Ljusdesign was called in to review the lighting along Vintergatan, Vintertorget and Regnbågsallén. Caroline let her aesthetic gaze enter the light of the fire and together with our Studio she created artificial lanterns and wood baskets. She came to call these Eldgnistor (Sparks of Fire).
The luminaire has water-cut patterns, like sparks from a crackling fire, and inside the baskets a warm glow shines, while a more adapted 3000 Kelvin light illuminates the ground. Tight but welcoming, the baskets shine from posts along pedestrian and bicycle paths, while more playful baskets in different sizes slowly sway suspended over Vintertorget. A beautiful meeting between the artificial and the traditional. A brilliant functionality and an environmentally conscious technological installation suitable for a technical Norrbotten University.
