PROJECT DETAILS
Marcel Breuer’s iconic Brutalist designs used raw concrete and curvilinear forms to create a “heavy lightness.” But seen through a modernist lens, they take minimalism to the point of bleakness. Interior Designer Janie Coka, Principal of TSAO DesignGroup, took a corner of Breuer’s huge Boca Raton Innovation Campus (BRiC) in South Florida, and created the oasis that is Marcel Brewer’s cafe.
The BRiC campus is being revitalized as a regional tech hub and, Coka explained, the future coffee shop was just a cold, concrete box. “When we, in the year 2020, come in to to build a space for 2025 to 2030, we want to bring in natural materials with texture and warmth. The linear wood panel in the ceiling is my response to the Brutalist surroundings.”
SLOTLIGHT LED III pendants drop down below the plane of the ceiling, where their black finish and continuous opal lens are prominent. “At TSAO DesignGroup, we’re always looking for ways to connect volumes of space and trajectories. The directional wood slats, supported by the SLOTLIGHT pendants, bring you into the space from one direction, and then send you out the other,” Coka said. A long SLOTLIGHT repeated above the service counter beckons patrons. “Their clean nature and slender profile are the perfect scale for the space.”
With 100% downlight, the wide spread distribution lights the space beautifully. Brightnesses are balanced via 0-10V continuous dimming. “The space looks fantastic! Ample vertical light at 90+ CRI provides appropriate coverage, and the patrons look great. The lighting makes the space unique. From the long [~60 ft] hallway approach, or if you’re walking along the lakeside outside, it stands out from the other spaces within the campus.”
“We love using the black linear SLOTLIGHT. It’s a go-to lighting element to reinforce the design and bring strong language into the space. They’re visually striking from any angle.”
