NUT AND SWIRL LIGHT UP MASCA’S INFORMATION AND TOURISM OFFICE
Tenerife-based Alicia Toledo Estudio designed the interior of Masca’s information and tourism office. Masca is a small and picturesque mountain hamlet, located in the Macizo de Teno mountains in the north-west of Tenerife.
Framed by impressive mountain views, the interior of Masca’s information and tourism office quietly complements the natural vista. Unfussy, contemporary furniture is the perfect companion to the original stonework, a highlight of the space. A considered mix of ‘lane lighting’ and a number of LZF’s Nut and Swirl pendants fill the interior with both downward and diffused light. To meet the project’s lighting needs, Alicia Toledo Estudio collaborated with Alexia Iluminación Led, a Tenerife-based lighting studio. Alexia Iluminación Led’s objective for the tourism office was to: ‘create harmony and comfort through the fusion of noble materials, taking into account nature, and projecting state-of-the-art LED lighting.’
Both Nut and Swirl were designed by long-standing LZF collaborator Ray Power. These two lamps are especially elegant designs, with warm, diffused light highlighting the grain of the natural wood veneer. Choosing a rich, cherry veneer for both lamps, Alicia Toledo Estudio ensure the Nut and Swirl pendants are in harmony with the space: decorative and at the same time restrained.
Described as the island’s ‘most beautiful village’, Masca is situated in Teno Rural Park, an area admired for its wild, natural beauty. The once quiet hamlet of Masca now attracts visitors wishing to discover rural life in Tenerife. With its well-maintained traditional architecture, the hamlet has been proclaimed an ‘Ethnographic Historic Place of Interest’—this is reflected in the Masca Ethnographic Museum, a house museum that very much paints a picture of everyday life in the area. Masca is also well known for the Masca Gorge. Popular with hikers, this narrow, eight-kilometre-long walking trail sweeps through dramatic scenery to Masca beach.
