PROJECT DETAILS
The Elizabeth and Leslie Richard Student Union at McNeese State University sits at the center of campus life in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a flexible hub for dining, studying, collaboration, and student activity designed by AQ Studios Architecture. Working with Lighting & Electrical Associates (LEA), the project team needed bright lighting within generous open interiors.
Sabin TAPER downlights were specified throughout dining and lounge areas, using the form factor and grouping to carve smaller gathering zones out of the larger open plan. Ranging from 1500 to 2500 lumens with a 40° flood distribution and 940K light quality, each TAPER provides comfortable, even illumination across both circulation paths and extended seating areas.
The TAPER pendants were specified in dual-toned Sapphire and Canary, a palette that nods to McNeese's blue and gold branding, with a neutral Pumice that brightens the mix and maintains a neutral reflected light temperature on the inside of the fixtures. Sabin's colored power cord in grey was selected to dissolve the composition into the ceiling rather than assert itself with black lines. In high-bay spaces where every cord is visible, color coordination and small details are the difference between an overhead plane that reads as busy and one that reads as considered.
The PET felt construction does additional work here. In an active cafe and circulation area where sound accumulates quickly, the acoustic absorption built into every fixture means TAPER is contributing to the atmosphere well beyond the lighting.
