PROJECT DETAILS
Industrial culture in light
For Germany, the Ruhr area has been synonymous with coal for many centuries. From the industrial revolution on, on through the entire twentieth century, this region has seen a blossoming industry based on the processing of mineral resources, driving the entire economy of the country. The closure of the mines in the ‘90s marked the end of the production era, but the beginning of a cultural revamping which led to a development of the tertiary sector. The emblem of this “new era” is Zeche Zollverein, also known as the Eiffel Tower of Ruhr. The first industrial structure, active from 1851 through 1986, it is now a cultural hub designated by UNESCO as part of the Heritage of Humanity.
RATIONAL LIGHTING
In order to make the coal mine and the adjacent coking plant accessible to the public, the Parkhaus Zollverein was built. The construction project is part of a dimension of dialogue with the pre-existing master plan, maintaining the history of the place intact and unadulterated. This included the construction of an underground car park, new paths and new pedestrian areas, all enhanced by Linea Light Group products. The result is a technical lighting wayfinding that guides the user through the underground area to the new connecting areas at ground level.
All the products used for Parkhaus Zeche Zollverein were supplied as custom version to meet the specific needs of the site. There are two protagonists in this project. Archiline and Maxi Tube. Archiline is installed in the false ceiling of the underground parking. Chosen for its powerful built-in lighting without glare, this product is the path of light needed to provide direction for the users. Installed in a custom version (cable length, frame and optics created ad hoc), it has a built-in DALI driver that makes system management functional. Maxi Tube, on the other hand, is used both underground and on the surface. Positioned as cove lighting, it provides efficient and discrete lighting, taking up very little space both around the exposed structure (with a fire-red connotation) and in the car park (3000K). Maxi Tube was also supplied in a custom version and with built-in DALI.
