PROJECT DETAILS
In the Istrian countryside, architect Idris Turato converted a former community cellar into a spectacular hotel with affiliated winery. With its asymmetrical terraces, traditional stone building and rust-red new extension, it complements the landscape sensitively. Large glass façades bring nature inside for the guests. And the Zumtobel lighting solutions create an atmospheric refuge of relaxation.
The small Istrian town of Motovun is famous for two things: White truffles and good red wine. Roxanich also stands for good red wine – it is the name of a leading Croatian wine producer. Mladen Rožanić, the founder and winegrower, has just opened a boutique hotel with affiliated winery in Motovun – and in doing so has returned to the place where he first began winemaking. The estate, planned by the Croatian architect Idis Turato, is situated at the base of a steep hill. The homes of the 500 or so inhabitants of the small town are nestled into the slopes. It is a panoramic location with relevance to tourism and as yet barely tapped potential. Surrounded by vineyards, with views of the Livade truffle forests and right in the heart of the emerging culinary area of the Istrian peninsula, the modern architecture is also intended to create a meeting place within this rural area.
The striking building is eye-catching even from a distance. The green hillside is interspersed with sloping plateaus that are reminiscent of abstract vineyards. A dynamic formation of landscape and architecture that brings history and the future together. On the hilltop, there is a sweeping, old stone building. The historical building from 1902 is the "Motuvun cellar," under which the original vaults extend. Both areas have been extensively refurbished and supplemented with modern architecture. Overground and underground. A special feature of the Roxanich Wine & Heritage Hotel is its spatial organisation: In fact, 70 percent of the estate is right in the middle of the hill, including the Roxanich wine cellar, which has been relocated here from the old Roxanich site at Nova Vas.
The historical building now accommodates the hotel with its 32 individually designed bedrooms and suites. It combines traditional Istrian style, which is reminiscent of Italy in the 1960s, with modern design. Each of the narrow ends of the building features a modern extension, designed by Idis Turatos, which parenthesise the existing building with their earthy, orange-red façades. The strict geometry of the cubes and the large glass fronts are in harmonious contrast to the old natural stone building with its green shutters. The four floors of the vaulted complex are each dedicated to an area of the wine production process. Winemaking and maceration, maturation and the cellar. The hotel also has a restaurant, an event room, a spa, a lounge and a club.
The architect wanted the lighting solutions to be invisible within the interior, making light an emotional element of the architecture. In close collaboration with Zumtobel, easily controllable lighting systems were integrated, which are unobtrusive thanks to their predominantly black coating. Above all, a warm and cosy atmosphere should be created, and this is ensured by the dominant, warm-white light temperature of 3000 K. The PANOS downlight series impresses here with high functionality, energy efficiency and sophisticated design. The multiple award-winning technology concept can be perfectly embedded in the architecture. The luminaires can be integrated in the spatial contexts of the building's many themed areas as an almost invisible source of light. From the hotel corridor to the wellness area. The light impresses with its effect in and on the interior, bringing specific areas into focus via targeted spotlights or ensuring general lighting right into the furthest corners.
In the hotel area, the functional luminaires are supplemented with atmospheric vintage luminaires, in the restaurant the tables are staged as islands of light and in the cellar, the CRAFT LED highbay luminaire ensures good lighting in challenging conditions. Not only is it lightweight and highly resistant, but is also features special optics. Each LED has its own lens that ensures glare-free, targeted lighting and efficiently illuminates rooms. The LITECOM intelligent lighting management system from Zumtobel allows for central control of all lighting installations. Perfect for a place that is a modern reflection of nature and traditional culture.
