Illuminating Play and Possibility
As one of the world's most recognised brands, LEGO has inspired generations through creativity, learning, and hands-on play. That spirit shaped the vision for the company's new North American headquarters in Boston — a workplace designed to celebrate creativity, connection, and well-being.
Designed by BDG Architecture + Design with lighting design provided by LUX Collaborative, the 157,000-square-foot hub embodies LEGO's signature blend of playfulness and precision, bringing the brand's ethos of imagination, collaboration, and innovation to life. Every architectural detail, from circular ceiling forms to colour-coded zones, was conceived to inspire creativity while supporting the flow of work and collaboration, creating a workplace that feels both highly functional and unmistakably LEGO.
Lighting at the hub does more than illuminate, it connects the workplace experience with the LEGO Groups creative ethos. In collaboration with Lux Collaborative and Boston Light Source, Fluxwerx Portal and Loop luminaires were carefully specified to shape space, enhance materiality, and respond to the rhythms of work and play. Their circular forms echo LEGO's iconic geometry, reinforcing the creative architectural language of the space while integrating seamlessly into its overall design narrative. Precise beam control and a range of distributions from intimate downlight to broad ambient spreads allow light to guide movement, emphasise textures, and define moments of focus or interaction.
Across open workspaces, Portal Recessed luminaires disappear into ceilings, delivering calm, uniform illumination that enhances focus while soft uplight accentuates volume. In meeting areas and collaborative corners, adjustable variants shift directionally to highlight walls, surfaces, or activity zones. Surface-mounted Portal fixtures extend the same visual continuity into corridors and transitional areas, ensuring seamless illumination throughout.
Suspended Loop luminaires add sculptural drama. With balanced uplight and downlight, they provide warmth, hierarchy, and visual rhythm to work spaces and gathering areas, creating spaces that invite collaboration while conveying a visually playful and intentional character.
Together, the lighting strategy threads the LEGO Group headquarters' diverse spaces into a connected whole. Light becomes a partner to architecture and human activity—illuminating, guiding, and inspiring. The result is a workplace that feels alive, innovative, and unmistakably LEGO: structured yet playful, precise yet human; a luminous environment where creativity and collaboration thrive.
