PROJECT DETAILS
Railcar company uses contemporary lighting to create modern, vibrant headquarters
TTX Company is a leading provider of railcars and related freight car management services to the North American rail industry. After 50 years in Chicago, the company moved its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina. It is now the anchor tenant of The Line, a new 16-story office tower in Charlotte's Southend neighborhood.
Gensler was hired to coordinate the design and management of the tenant fit out on the 15th and 16th floors, collaborating with Crown Lighting Group on the lighting plan and specifications.
During the initial project consultation meetings, the design team emphasized they were looking for a luminaire that would provide consistent, uniform illumination of the open office, regardless of the luminaires’ orientation. They wanted to achieve maximum flexibility with the lighting so that the space would remain well-lit, irrespective of the orientation or future re-orientation of the furniture systems.
The ceiling heights on the two floors range between 14 and 15 feet. However, with structural elements and mechanical systems, there was limited ceiling height with which to work. The design team was cognizant of balancing fixture spacing and glare and avoiding a cave effect from a direct-only light source.
Luminis’ HC2800 Hollowcore luminaire was selected to illuminate workstations and collaborative spaces across the two floors. The high bay pendant features an attractive hollow center and semi-opaque diffuser lens; its unique circular LED light engine contributes to that airy, open-center concept. Uniform light is achieved with a batwing distribution that offers a high vertical foot candle to minimize the cave effect. Despite delivering powerful illumination - over 17,000 lumens - there is minimal glare, even when sitting or standing directly beneath a luminaire.
Designers also wanted to avoid an overly dark ceiling. They did not want the luminous surface of the lens material to become an artificial or perceived ceiling with no light emitted above that lower horizontal plane. So, an uplight module was selected. Paired with the translucent diffuser, it helps to spread the light farther from each luminaire and achieve a wider on-center spacing. The concrete ceilings appear much warmer and more welcoming as a result.
At 30” in diameter, Hollowcore HC2800 provides a modern, sleek aesthetic across the office ceilings. In jet black, the luminaire and its accompanying stem and junction box blend into the ceiling and put the focus on the comfortable illumination.
TTX has successfully incorporated contemporary illumination to create a vibrant space in its new Charlotte headquarters that will see it through its next 50 years.
