PROJECT DETAILS
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center at Mission Bay prioritizes patient care and sustainability with its state-of-the-art medical treatment centers for women, children and cancer patients. Brand new construction of the 878,000 square foot hospital complex achieved LEED Gold Certification for its green design and eco-friendly solutions.
With patient care at the forefront of the hospital’s design, creating a comfortable and inviting environment was the paramount task for the designers at architecture firm Stantec and lighting designer Matthew Landl at Hiram Banks Lighting Design. As a result, architecture and lighting work together to deliver a warm and welcoming atmosphere at UCSF Medical Center.
Lighting design at the medical center answered a highly functional need while maintaining a sleek and minimalistic design. The chosen luminaires needed to achieve multiple tasks – including general lighting, illuminated signage, and focused spot lighting for art work. SUPERSYSTEM by Zumtobel met these requirements with an all-in-one package that also delivered an unobtrusive, streamlined aesthetic. With SUPERSYSTEM, an ideal balance of indirect and direct light was achieved, while keeping the ceilings as clean as possible. Working in tandem with SLOTLIGHT, the luminaires provided numerous custom options, with multiple sizes and outputs to meet lighting requirements throughout the entire hospital.
“In hospitals there is a lot going on visually. With SUPERSYSTEM we were able to eliminate some of the aesthetic clutter by using a single fixture in a sleek, compact housing that could achieve multiple needs throughout the entire hospital.” –Matthew Landl, Design Director Hiram Banks Lighting Design
Successful completion of the project was made possible through collaboration with Associated Lighting Representatives.
