PROJECT DETAILS
To mark UQAM's 50th anniversary, the Saint-Jacques bell tower was restored and re-illuminated with Lumenpulse Lumenbeam and Lumenfacade luminaires. Using Dynamic White technology—achievable through either Dynamic White fixtures or Opticolor+™—the lighting design reveals five poetic architectural moods: awakening, stretching, heart, vitality, and relaxation.
The Saint-Jacques bell tower at UQAM has long been a historic landmark in downtown Montreal. To mark the University's 50th anniversary and the tower's architectural restoration, a bold lighting design was conceived that both celebrates its heritage and redefines its presence in the city skyline.
Designed by UDO Design, the project sought to respect the bell tower's cultural significance while introducing a dynamic and evolving lighting identity. The concept uses dynamic white light to highlight the tower's form with subtle shifts in tone and intensity, evoking five architectural "postures": awakening, stretching, heart, vitality, and relaxation.
To bring this vision to life, Lumenpulse Lumenbeam luminaires were strategically integrated to deliver both precision and durability. Offering crisp white light across a range of tones, the fixtures accentuate the tower's Gothic Revival details, while their robust design ensures reliable performance in Montreal's challenging climate.
The project was inaugurated in January 2020 and has since earned significant recognition, including a Silver Award in the Grands Prix du Design competition for Architecture - Special Prizes for a Public or Cultural Building. The installation underscores UQAM's commitment to celebrating and protecting its built heritage, transforming the bell tower into a luminous signature for the neighbourhood and the city.
The Saint-Jacques bell tower now stands not only as a restored architectural treasure but as a radiant landmark, its story retold in light through Lumenpulse technology.
