BAD ELSTER SHINES IN A UNIQUE LIGHTING DESIGN
A new world of experience and light illuminates the royal complex of the Saxon state baths artistically
The Saxon state baths - the cultural and festival town of Bad Elster - shines in a completely new light: With the new "world of experience and lights", large parts of the historical architecture and the parks are impressively staged with a unique lighting design at the beginning of the twilight. Bad Elster, with its extensive historical parks, sophisticated spa architecture and the unique "festival mile of short distances", has offered a unique recreational landscape since it was named the Royal Saxon State Spa in 1848, which was deliberately designed for this purpose by famous garden architects in Europe. This special architectural landscape as the center of the spa now has a whole new dimension of attention with a year-round illumination experience that is unique in Europe.
World of lights at night
From October 9, 2021, a state-of-the-art lighting design that is unique in Germany will present the royal complex in Bad Elster in a radiant new world of lights at any time of the year. Numerous artistic illuminations creatively visualize the entire historical complex in a completely new dimension: visitors stroll through extensive, well-kept parks, let their senses be touched and stroll along the illuminated promenade paths from Albert Park to the bathing area and the forest park. The beauties of Bad Elster can be experienced in a completely new way in atmospheric locations, facades steeped in history, through shimmering water features and in a glowing natural setting: guests walk on illuminated paths to mystical places and illuminated works of art in a world of light - as an evening stroll in the sparkling light show.
Unique light design
The conception of the modern lighting design has been carried out since 2017 by the lighting designer Ulrike Birnbaum from the Office for Architectural Lighting Planning (Munich/ Görlitz/NYC). The project created a coherent web of light that accentuates points of interest in the Royal Grounds and connects them in a world of rich light tones and enveloping colors. What visitors can expect here in the evening hours is unique. There is no comparable area in Europe of this size and quality that, like Bad Elster, is so full of history and culture and enhanced by a light show.
Since the area contains a large number of natural monuments and listed buildings and is also protected as the entire park, the greatest challenge was to carefully reconcile the requirements of the monument protection authorities with the lighting design. For example, the entire installation is unobtrusive during the day; neither the cables nor the lights themselves are visible, but are hidden in niches and projections.
Environmentally friendly technology lights up until midnight
The topic of "light pollution" was an important part of the implementation ideas of all those involved right from the start. In order to avoid light pollution, the use of gentle, sustainable technology, the specific application-related illuminance, size, shape and alignment of the light cones, the targeted staging of nature as part of the routing of guest-frequented areas and the clear limitation of the period of use until midnight were sensible measures for the careful handling of chosen from the natural environment. In addition, all the lights are linked via a light control system that measures twilight and weather and adjusts the activation of the lights accordingly using previously loaded programs. The lighting designer Ulrike Birnbaum explains: "To protect insects, LED light sources were used, which emit a balanced light spectrum instead of singularly composed spectral ranges. The specified and installed lights have been subjected to appropriate tests by the manufacturers - the quality of the LEDs in the Luminaires is very high in this regard and animal-friendly.“
