PROJECT DETAILS
Adding Color, Flexibility, and Efficiency to Houston’s Performing Arts Landmark
The Wortham Center for Performing Arts is a non-profit charitable organization aiming to bring the best in music, dance, and theatre from both international and local groups to its community. The three-venue complex is located in the heart of the Pack Square Cultural District, in Houston Texas, USA and is surrounded by bustling downtown restaurants and shops.
In January 2025, the lighting in the Wortham Center was retrofitted to add colorful light in a space that was previously equipped with white light only. The RGBW light aimed to add life and dynamism to the space, while the LED upgrade provided longevity and energy savings. The application required a combination of excellent light output with sufficient punch to be able to reach the tall center of the arch while still providing adequate lateral coverage. It was also important that the customer would be able to control the light in strips along the ceiling to provide flexibility in programming content.
The installation utilized 36 Blast Powercore gen5, RGBW luminaires with a 20-degree spread lens to fulfill the desired design objectives. The goal was to illuminate the arched ceiling that stands at an astounding 28.9m (95ft) from the ground floor. The luminaires were mounted in an alcove beneath the arched ceiling, approximately 600-900 mm (2-3 ft) apart. The new luminaires were seamlessly integrated with the existing controller infrastructure with data supplies by Data Enabler Pro gen2.
Color Kinetics products were chosen due to their proven track record in quality, performance, reliability, and efficiency. The new installation is projected to save 90% more energy than the previous lighting system, equivalent to 16,200 watts.
This retrofit not only enhances the Wortham Center’s architectural character with vibrant, flexible color but also underscores its commitment to sustainability and efficiency. By combining dynamic design with significant energy savings, the new lighting system ensures the venue will continue inspiring audiences for years to come.
